Birds

ABOUT
This image is of Rock Pigeons (also known as Feral Pigeons) at the Islesboro Ferry in Lincolnville Beach Maine. They are a non-native species that came from Europe in the 1600s and are common to docks where they can nest in elevated structures similar to cliffs.
It was a cloudy day with some rain and the pigeons were flying fast around the ferry landing as we cast off. I was on the upper deck and was able to photograph them looking straight ahead.
This image is part of the series Anthropocene about human impacts on nature. The image above is a detail of a more panoramic image showing the birds in flight 3 times (click on the arrow to see the full image). The horizontal lines reference the technology used in TVs known as raster scans where an electron beam draws the image line by line.
The multiple images of the birds with strong graphic shapes is an attempt to display the beauty of flight in different stages of gliding and soaring while the use of lines and sepia colorization references the reality of nature under stress.
