Chair Umpire

This was taken at the US Open of a very sprightly chair umpire on one of the side courts. I love her laughing expression, not typical of an umpire, and the graphic shape she and the chair create.

The fun part of the US Open is it includes many matches and practice courts unlike other sporting events like football, baseball, and basketball. With large tennis events, you get to see different players, their entourages, and tournament officials. It’s also a great people-watching event attracting New York diversity and international people as well.

I’m not sure what the price is now but a grounds pass was $50, a good deal for what you can see.

Yuh Boys & Chris Lee

Party in Brooklyn where the Yuh Boys played a reunion show and Chris Lee took the mike for some choice words. The split-screen effect happens when another camera flash goes off during the exposure. It’s a dynamic effect that happens only with digital cameras from what I have seen.

Appian Way

This was the first digital photo I took I liked, with an iPhone anyway, it’s from 2011. Probably the first photo I liked since the mid-’90s. It’s from a small street in Harvard Square called the Appian Way, which struck a chord since I took so much Latin as a kid and learned ‘all roads lead to Rome’. Not sure what I like about this one so much or why it got me interested in taking pictures again. Maybe it symbolized the beginning of the end of my marriage and family life – a lot to read into a pic of empty chairs but I think it was, it was the beginning of a new phase that started in 2010 and continues to this day.

Lifestream

Animated images from the series Daystream. ‘Moth Wings’ music by Benoit Pioulard. These images were created back in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Mostly taken with a Hasselblad 2 1/4 camera handheld, moving hence the blur, with Fujichromr and Ektachrome color transparency film. See also the Daystream series.

Christening

This was taken of our firstborn after he was Christened on an island in Maine. Every family has iconic photos – ones that go up on the wall, then down and up again somewhere else, or get reprinted and reframed always to reappear – this is one of ours.

It was a cloudy day and raining a little bit and we had just made our way home after an Episcopal service with friends and family. A brief moment in time with expressions that mean so much and last forever.

Portugal

This was taken along the Portugal and Spanish border somewhere in the mountains. We stayed in a beautiful Pousada. From what little I understand some of the Pousadas were originally private estates and then taken over by the government, possibly under Communist influences, and turned into public hotels. Anyways I love this photo of the lone guy with a video camera (pre-digital) peering out along the border of two countries that are so similar yet profoundly different.
